Ferrymead Heritage Park Re-opening Day - 29th September 2024

Sumner Band were proud to be at Ferrymead Heritage Park for their official re-opening day on Sunday 29th September.

Playing prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony

The park had been closed over the winter months for maintenance, and Christchurch’s mayor along with a number of other dignitaries were present for a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the occasion.

The first ever performance of the Ferrymead Fanfare, specially written for the occasion by the band's musical director Victoria van Uden

The band has been practicing at the park for a while and is forging a solid relationship with Ferrymead - a wonderful facility that we’re very lucky to have as part of ‘our patch’.

Imperial Echoes - became very well known as it was used by the BBC as the theme tune to its Radio Newsreel on World Service from 1940 to the end of the 1980s.  Not often heard these days...

A great venue for a concert on a lovely spring day...

Imperial Echos

The band played a couple of sets during the day, and a few of the band members even took a trip atop the double deck tram and managed to play a few tunes while travelling around the park!

It's Hey Jude, so time for the audience to sway to the music!

The band has two more engagements planned at the park before the end of the year - we’ll be there on the Sunday of Labour Weekend, helping the park to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Canterbury Railway Society, and then back on 1st December for the park’s Christmas Spectacular.
